I'm fairly intimidating, 170 lbs, all shoulder and torso. but one night a friend of mine was talking to his target and i think she wanted to cause trouble, and invited one of her male friends over. of course he walked over asking if he was going to have to beat some ass. how would i have just knocked him off his high horse?

If he instantly goes into fight mode, your best off just ejecting from the convo and find a new set. Just tell them, you didn't realize they were together and they look like a great couple.
But if a guys comes over and doesn't instantly want to fight but makes a comment, then the best thing to do is act like hes not there. Seems lame, but if done correctly, you can totally shut someone down. You can also look at them like WITHOUT SAYING IT, 'did he really just say that?'
The goal is make friends first, but then if they are jack asses, f*ck'em. Make it like their ghost and go on with your life.
*If they want to fight, don't let ego get ahead of logic. Just walk away. You never know who is an amazing MMA fighter, whos there with 20 other dudes, or has a gun or knife... its not worth it.
