hey fellas,

so after a good swim i went into the large steam room in my building.
it was already all fogged up when i came in but there was me and two girls
in the steam room (probably normally attractive, not revolting and not HBs).
as soon as i walked in i said hey and smiled of course. i then decided that i want to
join in on their conversation, just for the heck of it - im always happy to practice!
in other words, there was no AA involved at all.

there were 2 problems however:
1) they were telling each other stories about their home towns and their jobs
and shit. nothing general that i could just pitch in on - so how do you open
in such a case?

2) when they did start talking about something general, they talked about steel
(one girl said that they are mining it in her home town, the other girl said that you
can't mine steel because it doesn't exist in nature). they casually argued about it
and they were like 'we should look it up'. being an educated person, i know that
steel is basically iron and carbon together and that they make it and not mine it.

i could have pitched in saying 'i couldn't help but overhearing, but i think that steel
is not a compound - its just a mixture of a few elements'.

i didn't say that because i thought that it would make me look creepy and cocky.
i know that i should just be talking and not thinking, but what do you guys think?
how would you have opened them?

cheers!

I'm pretty sure if you used the words compound or elements to girls that were arguing about steel mining then they would have left within 30 seconds.

'It's made using iron.' can get their attention but you have to move on very quickly or they will get bored/confused/both.

thats the thing, i felt im of more value just sitting there alpha-like than saying that shit.
what would you do? even if i said that its made with whatever, how / where would you take the convo of 2 girls that are talking to each other eagerly about absolute crap?

Are you really talking about steel mining? What's wrong with you guys! I have a better question... Have you ever been arrested? Do you believe in ghosts?

Those are just the first two things that came to mind because it doesn't really matter. They might illicit some emotion which is good.

Sometimes, rarely, when there are multiple girls they will ramp up their bitch shields for interrupting. But then you just laugh and sit back and revel in the awkwardness that builds up when you don't leave the room with your tail between your legs.

This really goes back to that same theory that you basically have 3 seconds to talk to someone in a bar before it just becomes weird. It's also like sitting next to someone in an airplane. Basically, if you start talking to them immediately when you get there, it's not awkward, but the longer you wait, the more tension builds up and the less natural it becomes.

If you wanted to talk to them, the best thing would have been to start a conversation of YOUR choosing when you first got in the sauna. That said, once you were sitting there, if you wanted to break the ice, you definitely could have gone in with the iron comment because there's nothing to lose at that point. It's definitely a way to get into the conversation- and then you could transition to something more interesting.
