System,
There's a few ways to circumvent this --

First thing is first -- if you can score a ride to get to other areas where people don't have preconceptions about you already, you won't be fighting an uphill battle in trying to change peoples minds about you. From there, after you "recreate" yourself, it will be easier to convey the "new you" to others, because you've changed your self concept.
Having said that, if this is something you can't do, keep in mind that the way people view you starts with how you view yourself: if you can change the way you view yourself, you will begin to notice subtle changes in the way you act. Don't let the way other people see you shape who you are -- if people think you're a dork, or a nerd, or what have you, shrug them off -- they are trying to impose these titles on you, most likely because they are afraid of what you can become: we use these labels to limit people. It's cliche say to say, but it is extremely true:
Don't let them bring you down.
