I play guitar in a local indie band and have found that it is almost impossible to bring up the fact that im in a band when im hitting on girls without sounding cocky. It is a popular belief that girls dig guys who play guitar and learning guitar will get you laid. However, the only times that this has actually helped me is after shows, or when Im booking shows. As long as they find out im in a band in some way other than me telling them, it usually increases their interest in me. I was wondering if any of you guys use this to pick up girls.

Dont you meet women at these shows? It would seem you'd be hot shit after walking off stage and rolling up on a chick that watched you play. If you walk up to a woman and tell her after only a few minutes of talking that your in a band, it's gonna seem forced. Just talk like usual nd eventually you'll find a way to slip it into the conversation without it being forced. You're thinking about it too much. Talk with a girl enough, trust me, the opportunity will come like a smack to the face.

It's about the way you bring it up, like anything. You can't just drop the, "Yeah, I'm in a band." You will sound like a chode. However, they're several ways to bait a girl into it.

Examples I use are, when a girl texts me asking me what I'm doing, I'll say I just left practice- because it's usually true. Then they'll be like, "Practice for what?" You say you play guitar in a band. Easy- she asked for it.

Or if you can weave something situationally relevant into the conversation. I tend to bring up things that my band and I talk about because we tend to talk about the most random, ridiculous things.

Girl: Says something
Me: That totally reminds me of something I was talking about at practice today.
Girl: Practice for what?

It's not bragging if you bait it correctly.

I try not to use the fact that I'm in a band as a crutch. They'll find out eventually- and it helps, but sometimes it is an interesting frame to use.

Hope that helps.

As a lifelong musician, I concur w/Riott. While my game was atrocious for a long time, it seemed that being lead singer in a band and actually knowing how to play guitar (been playing nearly 20 yrs, and no I'm not 50!) was helpful.

However, it is not simply the bringing up of your musical goings on. This is where I think about how tyler d talks about being someone who 'gives value'.

In the spirit of that, I never just said 'yeah i'm in a band'. I gave out tracks, I burned a cd, I showed a video of a show we played. I could care less if they threw it out or whatever because to me it was just one of dozens of people I gave my music to in hopes of getting more listeners. Making a girl a mixtape/mix cd is pretty gay, but if it's a burn of original material - not so gay anymore. My opinion.
