I would like to start wearing aftershave. A tad on the retro side but I do like to smell good!

I used to wear it when it was a tennager. I'd often get Lynx (known as Axe outside the UK) aftershave and the desodrent all in one pack, usually for Christmas or a birthday. But then they stopped making the one I liked (it was called Atlantis... remember it?) and I just stuck to the Lynx deodorants and have done ever since.

What I would do is wear the aftershave and the deodorant, this was great because they were the same smell! Long after the smell of the deo had worn off the aftershave would keep my scent nice, whilst the remaining deodorant would be keeping away BO! Perfect!

The problem now, as an adult, is finding a nice after shave but using a neutral deodorant to stop the pits from smelling.

Now I could go back to Lynx, however the only the aftershaves they now sell aren't very nice smelling! Africa is ok but Twist smells like kitchen cleaner!

I've tried looking out for a neutral smelling deodorant but so far haven't found one. Also I would like to go a bit more upmarket and get some classy aftershave.

So what I would like to know is:

What aftershave do you recomenned?

How do I combat my problem wearing of deodorant and aftershave at the same time? (without the two different scents overlapping and smelling odd!)

Good thing you don't wear Lynx anymore lol.

Never wear garbage like Lynx. It makes you smell like a 13 year old going to an elementary school dance. It's cheap, mainstream crap. Stay away from all the usual "aftershaves" you get from supermarkets, as well. They're shockingly boring, often smell horrible and are just an overall waste of money.

1) Wear unscented antiperspirants. i.e Mitchum Unscented roll on. You should be able to find this one in pretty much any supermarket or department store.

2) Purchase a real cologne. It's important to note many designer colognes are also boring to the ladies nowadays, but they're still leaps and bounds ahead of low-end supermarket aftershaves. Many of the typical Versace or Calvin Klein fragrences are overpriced and smell good, but they're nothing that'll make people go WOW! Expect to be paying at least $65 - $80AUD for a decent 30ml of cologne. It's well worth it though, and the bottle won't run out for months, possibly years. Some designers such as Viktor & Rolf are quite pricey (at least $130AUD) but they do smell phenomenal.

My recommendations:

Higher end:

Marc Jacobs: BANG (very spicy. Smells amazing. My current fav.)
Viktor & Rolf: Antidote (The BEST cologne I have ever had. Words cannot describe)
Giorgio Armani: Acqua Di Gio (very popular, smells amazing, but a bit over-worn)
Giorgio Armani: Code (fantastic. Not too over-worn)


Mid-range:

JOOP: GO (fruity. smells nice. Good for summer)
David Beckham: Signature (ignore the David Beckham label, its brilliant. Very soft and sweet)

Use no more than 2 or 3 squirts or it'll be overpowering. Don't use it on your clothes. Spray on your neck, wrist and chest. A subtle whiff of a good cologne is all you need. I've tried a crazy amount of designer colognes and these are the ones I've been told by the ladies, are the best. Some are musky, some are spicy and some fruity...I would try out some samples and see what suits you best! Ask for FEMALE opinions on how you smell, as us guys are often clueless idiots lol.

But again....Stay away from crap like Lynx. You'll be in a different universe once you've smelt a few REAL colognes.

Personally I use Hugo Boss-Boss Bottled Night or Jean Paul Gaultier-Le Male. Both smell pretty amazing. I know they're pretty expensive but I'm looking to get something by tom ford, just not sure which one

What's the best way to sample different aftershave/cologne? I head that if you go into the shop and smell more than three your nose stop recognising smells. Is this true?

Most stores that sell designer colognes have stacks of little paper sample slips that you can spray a few squirts onto and have a sniff. Problem is, on paper/cardboard I find a lot of them smell the same. Everyone's nose is different, but to me a lot of colognes smell like a shot of vodka at first....Hence its difficult for me to suss out something good. Thats why I bring along a female most of the time lol. That being said, you still aren't going to get a truly accurate smell unless you wear a cologne for a day or so and let all the notes pan out.

Or you could just spray it on your arms and wait a few minutes, which would give a more realistic idea of the smells, but then you run into issues of colognes conflicting with each other.

Overall I have a hard time selecting new colognes. I usually stand around for ages smelling almost every one of them in the shop lol. When you buy designer colognes you'll usually get given samples of other colognes too, which makes it easier to choose next time. Grab something like Acqua Di Gio to play it safe, ask for a few samples to take home and find out what smells best on you.

Normally they're little spray bottles, about half the size of your finger! I have heaps stacked up somewhere in my bathroom draw lol

Why not put a different scent on each wrist and you've got an instant opener to try on any passing female. Lots of fun, interaction and some kino too

I’ve just been into a supermarket and went to buy the Mitchem deodorant you recommend. However the one I noticed was called ‘Ice Cool’, rather than look like a maniac and smell the deodrent in the isle, I assumed that this one was scented.

Is this the unscented version or is the unscented version specifically branded as ‘unscented’. Odd question but is the unscented version unisex? So next time I know that I may have to look in the ladies deo shelf.

I love Armani: Code, been using it for a while now, but I also enjoy using Nivia for Men post Shave balm, its available anywhere, smells decent, and is good for days when you don't want to wear the Code...Not to mention it makes your skin look smoother, I guess.
