I always wondered how facial hair fit into attractiveness, because it certainly had to have been sexually selected at some point in our evolution. This study makes a lot of sense to me and I have heard pick up guys in interviews comment on facial hair. I know Paul Janka said he never did pick up clean shaven because he found women liked to touch his face a lot more, so he clearly found something in his experience of sleeping with 140 women as he said in the interview, and this study seems to back that up.
Quote:
The researchers carried out the study using computer technology to alter pictures of 15 men’s faces so that they displayed different degrees of hairiness. Five levels of facial hair were used - clean-shaven, light stubble, heavy stubble, light beard and full beard.

The pictures were shown to 76 women who were asked to rate them for masculinity, aggression, dominance, attractiveness, age, and social maturity. They were also asked how desirable each man would be as a short-term or long-term partner. Faces with full beards were judged to be the most masculine, aggressive and socially mature. They were also thought to look five years older.

They were rated the least attractive and the worst choice for a short-term relationship. Men with light beards were considered the most dominant. Those with light stubble were rated the most attractive and as the ideal romantic partner for the short or long term. Clean-shaven men finished bottom for masculinity, dominance, aggression, and social maturity, and they were the least favoured choice as a long-term partner. They came second-to-last for attractiveness.

"In desirability for a short-term relationship, a female preference for male faces with stubble or light beard was found, with clean-shaven and fully bearded faces being the least preferred. This indicates that females are not selecting faces displaying relatively high or low masculinity, but are rather preferring males who are clearly mature - post-pubertal - but not too masculinised. The same pattern was found for preferences for a long-term relationship

Great, so I can throw away all razors except the electric one. Only one I use anyway.

The explanation for the preference is not clear, but experts in human evolution say that that facial hair may be a signal of aggression because it boosts the apparent size of the lower jaw, emphasising the teeth as weapons.

"Facial hair may have been sexually selected by females on the basis of associated male success, despite its threatening appearance. Clean-shaven faces therefore may suggest appeasement, as well as being an obvious sign of sexual immaturity.

"Increasing levels of facial hair were associated with increased perceptions of aggression, in that bearded faces were perceived as being the most aggressive, whilst clean-shaven faces were rated as being the least aggressive. And as facial hair increased in a linear fashion, so did female ratings of masculinity and dominance.
I found this very interesting as welll. I remember being at a bar a few weeks ago and seeing a heavy guy with a goatee the style and looked like of the old UFC fighter Tank Abbott, so much hair on his lip and chin you couldn't even see his mouth. I remember feeing intimmidated like I didn't want to step on this guys toes and even going out of my way a little not to get in his space so there would be on interaction, and usually I never care about that sort of thing, and this is the same bar where massive college football players hang out that are huge and I intermingle with them all the time and this guy was probably 6 inches shorter than me just looked like a fat bull dog but like an agressive bad ass you didn't want to mess with. I certainly would have been an appeaser in this situation. He was probably kind of scary to chicks if he ever approached though.

I think it ultimately boils down to how you feel about yourself so you should wear what ever hair style you like and are comfortable with #1. However I disagree it's useless info or at least any less useless than Peacocking in PU. I think it's a bigger topic than that myself because clearly men have clearly developed facial hair in evolution for some reason in sexual selection, but hey you'd rather talk abut putting on some goggles an a gold medallion and peacockin it out have at it. I dont see how this is a lot different to talk about hair style than general style.

*BTW I meant to post it in the Lounge if someone would care to move it there or where ever it's appropriate, general questions is probably not where it should be.

Personally I find women to vote 50/50 clean shaven vs stubble so do what you think looks best on you.

One upside to being clean shaven is that it's more comfortable for her if you down on her. Or even just making out.

Oh dude I could have told you this without the study! For years now(I'm getting to be an old fart) I've experimented with this over and over. By far!!! I get the most looks from women, in fact I get down right eye fucked by women when I have stubble. Then I try clean shaven and it's like I'm a diseased freak. Well not that bad but there is a clear and noticable difference in the way women look at me. Anyway that's my experience. Interesting topic to bring up. Nowadays I just leave the stubble 24/7.

Interesting topic! Definitly worth a deeper-look. Regarding the fact that a higher beard depicts natural maturity, it is caused by the fact of the middle-ages. You always saw a wizard or a wisegeer with a beard. This person was looked up to in all forms, they were the highest circles of the community and still this fact depicts the man of today.

A beardgrow or a stubble is more preferable then clean shaven. It radiates the wisdom, maturity and arrogance of knowing you ARE the best!

Btw, studies show men developed facial hair to be "scary" (dominant) to other animals, not other men or women (same as long hair on men too). Plus, in nature you could not have stubble, only a full beard (mature), none (growing up) or a not full beard (some guys dont have enough facial hair). Last, human males are losing body hair over time, and this applys to facial too, so if anything, this shows guys with less facial hair are reproducing more

I've seen studies as well that show western cultures are becoming more feminised now that women don't need a man as much for survival, and that they are looking for less masulinized men that would theoritically be better with child rearing.

That said I believe that's just mostly culture and social conditioning, standards of beauty that's laid on top of the evolutionary hardwired stuff that's still there. It take more than a couple generations to change what thousands have created..

Even 50 years ago survival was still dependent on a strong man in western world. Millions of years of evolutionly hardwired triggers didn't changed in 50 years IMO even if society tells women get a metrosexual fement model looking guys. It tells me I should like 90 lb anerexic models and I don't.

personally i think this is true. when i have facial hair/stubble it draws attention to my jaw alot more and i definitely notice guys talking to me different as well as girls. also the facial hair helps hide blemishes/zits and gives u a little confidence boost if you have to battle bad skin.

one possible point that comes to mind is that when looking in the mirror your first reaction is to look at your beard/stubble which distracts you from any features that you may find negative about yourself. in a way the beard strokes your ego i suppose. either way. love my facial hair.hehe

This is so true. Whenever I can't be bothered shaving I seem to pick up more! I think it's time to get an electric shaver.

IMO it is bulsshit

having stobbles depends on the person. some are good with it, others not at all.

as well it depends on the particular woman. some like it for some persons, others not.

So, please, rather focus on stuff that MATTERS.
