So I approached 10 girls earlier during my lunch break using this opener (below). NOTE I found it quite difficult to put into words the actions that go with the opener but hopefully it's clear enough.

Ok so here it is. Be aware, smiling is VERY important for this.

Me: (as I'm approaching, I pull a piece of paper out of my pocket) Hi, can I borrow a pen?

HB: Sure/ Yes (hands over pen)

Me: Thanks. (Pause) So..what's your number? (As you say this you act as if you are going to write it down- that's why you needed the pen)

Firstly I am aware this breaks many of the "rules" and looks very AFC, but it seems I can make it work. The point is you know it's cheesy and SHE knows YOU know it's cheesy and that's why it's charming (if you do it right). I'm only 18 which may be why this works?

The responses I recieved fell into these categories:

2 out of 10- Laughed and gave me their numbers straight away (tbh I was a bit suprised)
I then introduced myself properly and chatted for a several minutes (standard stuff DHV etc) so as to avoid flakes at a later date.

5 out of 10- Laughed and said something like "that's so cheesy". I would respond by laughing aswell and saying something like "I was testing if you had a sense of humour". Then I would introduce myself, DHV, run game for a few minutes. I got 3 more numbers like this.

1 girl said she had a BF (I believed her and had no interest in persuing it further)

1 girl said "why would I give you my number?" (Said in a fairly friendly way)
I wasn't sure how to respond and wasn't able to recover.

1 girl said "why would I give you my number?" (Said very defensively and looked at me like I was insane)

The last 2 are the ones I need help with. I mean the first one maybe I could have just said "because I'm awesome" and then carried on into my normal game but I'm not convinced that would have worked. The second one I have no ideas and to be honest thought I would encounter more often.


I am aware the opener reads badly and looks AFC but I am happy to try and justify anything in it.

or go direct "So how I can meet you again if I haven't got your number?"

or play along "So that I can return it (the pen) to you when not needed anymore"

or just change the topic.

Man, there are so many routes from that point...

Your opener gave me an awesome idea for a more indirect opener.
Me: Hey, can i borrow a pen? i will be quick!

Me: Thanks. So what's your number? (then smile and say something to push her)
ah ah (you wish/just kidding)! seriously i need to write the grocery list (or just say something like this xD)

then quickly start writing something from your cellphone to the paper like you asked the pen for something you really needed xD

after that just keep talking to her while you are writing, she will stay there because your using her pen.
I just came up with this, need to field test it, but it looks good to me.

Ha dude that sounds awesome and it's kind of what I was thinking when I came up with my original one- you've got their pen so you have more time and are less likely to receive a hostile response than you would normally.
