| Mate I have this very same problem! I have had years of stress from this going out and it's become so bad I had to come up with a solution for myself. So...if I am out with a group of mates (as in the lads) I tend not to care what they think of me, so naturally I am less rigid and probably can dance reasonably well. But...
If I'm with girls, particularly girls I like (trying to game), then I get scared of the dancefloor. What I do is simply to avoid it (at least at first)...I can't dance...I don't try.
Ok I know it sounds extreme, but generally it is very possible to avoid the dancefloor and still look cool (cooler even) than if you were dancing. If a girl or group of girls tells me to come and dance, I think the phrase "seriously, you're actually going to dance to this? Ok I'll leave you to it, I'm gonna go and chat to them girls over there, they look interesting". To me, I think this makes the girl(s) question their dancing and is likely to make them think they are a bit boring/uninteresting (bit of a neg) and it keeps you away from the dancefloor without looking like you're scared of dancing.
Ok, so now you have to go and approach the girls you said you were going to. That's fine, you don't need to game these girls, simply go up to them and ask them what DJ is playing or what they think of the club. As far as the girls you're hoping to get with are concerned, you're so cool you can approach any girls in the club, whilst the girls you want to get with will start thinking, "Hey, that guy seems pretty cool, confident, etc. We're here dancing on our own being surrounded by drunken idiots who keep grabbing our asses."
I reckon they'll soon be back round you, thus you avoid dancing and look cooler even than if you had been dancing and were good.
Then when you have to dance or feel more comfortable, dancing will be far easier as you will feel cool and they will think you're cool. Also, doesn't Strauss say he doesn't ''do dancing''? I seem to remember reading that and if he can get away with it then so can I.
Hope this helps dude, it helps me normally.
Oh, and I agree with Frosty. The main thing is to have fun whatever you decide, or at least appear to.
