Ok so im studying Game Design at uni (its a terrible course and i wish i chose something else) and its hard to keep girls interested when they ask what i study. I also work in a games retailer.

Most of the time i just get the "oh" reply. I need some way to make it sound interesting or to make myself sound less geeky.

I was thinking of saying im just doing it for the degree but that may make me sound really undecisive about big things in life. But i cant come up with a reason explaining why I work in a games shop.

I dont really want to outright lie about what i do though.

Anyone got any advice or been in a similar situation?

Games are fun, girls know this. Girls play rock band and wii sports. Just like you know they grew up around super mario and maybe some mortal kombat.

be enthusiastic about it and girls won't think its nerdy. NTM some wordplay could help you out

If I studied game design, I would LOVE to share it.. Something like this:
"Have you ever played Super Mario on a Nintendo? Or Wii Fit on a Wii? It's guys like me who makes it possible.. I design all the graphics.. I paint and make the characters move... Don't you just love painting?"

(Look this might seem a bit stupid because your studies is something else, but the idea is to show PASSION).

i was always trying to think of ways to make it sound like i was just doing it cos there was nothing else but still not sound like i hate it

dont get me wrong i love games and would love to design them. But the course and its instructors have been no help at all and working in retail is like stabbing myself in the face.

But ill give the whole play with words thing a try next time!

Don't worry about coming across as a nerd--I personally feel that nerds are the most interesting people to hang around and talk to, and many of my female friends feel the same. I know the whole nerd image doesn't mess well with the Alpha thing, but you actually don't have to be Alpha in order to get women. Believe it or not, there's a whole range of women out there, many of whom respond well to certain tactics and not to others--the Alpha approach is not a one-size fits all, which, if I remember correctly, can be actually be more aptly described as a one-size fits none. Do whatever works best for you.

Dude I know what you mean. I am also a huge nerd like you. I am studying broadcasting and mass communication to become a video game journalist. I am starting my freshman year of college tomorrow and already have 4 years of experience in this field. I work for 2 sites, one of which I share ownership of. I've interviewed interesting people and have gotten games for free to review. People believe it or not are very impressed with it, even if it is about video games. I get asked a lot about it when I mention it and people think it is really cool. It also gives me an excuse to play video games as people think it is "research" which technically it is. You really just have to be passionate about it. If your passion seriously comes through, she will become interested and excited by what you do, not matter how nerdy it is. If you do not possess a true passion for it, you are screwed and can't cover it up.

The key here is to put an interesting spin on it!

example: don't say "I'm a video game developer"

say something off the wall like "I create sexy virtual characters for geeks"
