I would also add start working to your own style. While its good to have a "default" look, its way better to have your own look to have as you stand out way much more than any peacock item could make you stand out. But this certain of thing takes a lot of time and effort. As you have to try out various things and see how they work and what have you.
This is just me, but I would stay away from trying to learn what is currently fashionable. Primary because it changes so much and if you try to follow it, it becomes very expensive clothing wise. And in my opinion a time waster.
Following current fashion is good for a number of reasons even if someone doesn't personally choose to dress that way. One, it makes you seem in touch and in tune with what's going on. It gives you what the psychologists term 'privileged information' which increases her perception of your value. Two, if you can talk about this kind of stuff with girls and sound knowledgable it will set you apart from most other guys.
There's no need for guys to dress like a mall mannequin each and every month. But buying a few versatile, key items which can be mixed and matched, that happen to be in the current season's style is NEVER a bad thing.
As for developing your own style, yeah, do this. The KEY to dressing well is to wear something that you feel comfortable in and can rock well. If it appears eye catching or otherwise interesting to outsiders, all the better. Having a default look is a good base, and allows you to dress up with accesories easily for some variety without much effort.

The only thing here is a lot of retail workers are on commission. So a lot of them will try and get you to buy what ever you are looking at or trying on. Because of this it may be better to ask a female customer that is about for an opinion. Which is good practice for pick up.
That may be the case a lot of the time but they still make commission off of whatever happens to look good on the person. I've dated a lot of fashion retail girls in the past and each and every one of them love dressing customers in clothes which compliment their body/style/face. They are also going to be knowledgeable as to a good cut of the clothing, a current style, and what goes with what.
I'd reccomend this over trying to pick up a female customer and get her opinion. A)It'll mostly seem weird. 2)This guy is totally new to pickup so I doubt he'd have the skills yet to succesfully pull off this kind of day game with confidence. 3)If you develop rapport with a particular sales assistant in a certain store, bring a chick there. If you can be greeted by name and seem at home their it'll increase your social proof.

We have H&M here in the US, and I believe you guys also have Gap over there. Not sure what else is shared across the pond.
As far as what we call 'high street' goes, which basically is stylish, mid priced clothing of non-designer label, we have H+M, Topman, River Island...those are probably the main ones.
Good discussing this with you dude, I'm sure it'll help the thread starter to see that there are various paths and opinions in this pick-up community, and they are different but often equally valid
