So what is cold reading?

Cold reading is verbal judo of a sort that will give people the idea that you know amazingly large amounts of information about them that you don’t. It has several techniques and they rely heavily on ambiguous language. There are much easier ways to get in someone’s head but after being in “the game” I get asked about it all the time so without too much more adieu.

The Rainbow rouse-
The rainbow rouse involves using contrasting statements about you. Sometimes these are called mini cold reads in the community.
“I can see that you have this hard shell on the outside but once someone gets through this you’re as soft as a teddy bear.”

Barnum Statements-
These are statements that could apply to a large number of people.
“I can see from your aura that you watch a lot of television.”

Forking statements-
This is where the verbal judo gets good. If you get a yes response you continue using the word and or which means. If you get a no you reframe the question from specific to more general.

You: I see that you have a ring from your grandmother.
Her: no
You: which means, they only treated like a grandmother figure.

You’re never wrong-
Perhaps this is a little bit of evilness but if you get a no you tell the person that they may need a bit of time to sort it out in their head and continue on to a new topic.
