Hey, girls smile at me a lot when I walk by. It's usually a close lipped smile, though, as opposed to a smile that shows the teeth. Is this just a social politeness thing? Does anyone know? I take it as an IOI because I'm a bull headed guy anyway, but I get the impression a full smile is a much better "go ahead" signal.

I was going to add "She has bad teeth," and "Wait and see if she looks back at you" for options, but that's not really what I'm asking. It would be really helpful if any of you guys have had experience where women don't even give you these kind of smiles. That would tell me something.

listen bro, its them being polite most of the time, smiling with teeth is more of the emotion your giving a girl, if your getting it as you walk by its polite, thats more of why openers were created so you have a question more than just a random greeting that can be rejected.

You can tell a natural smile from a polite/fake one. I was at the mall the other day, and there was this fine chick and the counter, and I was walking out. I had my play boy bunny ring on my pinky finger, so I raised my pinky and rubbed my soul patch on my face (on purpose). I saw her looking, and then she turned away while smiled. Then I knew, BAM! It's on!

There's smaller indicators, I'd say if they tilt the head while they do it, its legit. The smiles thing gives me trouble too, you gotta use your discretion or take chances.

Definitely an IOI. One on my definitions of IOI is, do you have her attention? If you were just walking by each other then she could just ignore you and go about her day, but she didn't, she wanted to let you know that shes friendly.

What does it matter?

She smiled...omg was it out of politeness or is she interested??!?!

If a girl smiles at you, go say hi. And THEN find out whether it was out of politeness or out of interest. Chances are if she randomly smiles at you (someone you don't know), its probably out of interest. If it IS out of politeness, she'd be polite enough to have a conversation with you if you talk to her right?
And having a conversation with her is a step closer to getting to know her, get to know her, etc and who knows what would happen - maybe she might DEVELOP an interest in you. Either way you have a chance of getting with her...

It's a win win situation.

can't tell much by the smile... her mood, the circumstance, and her personality are all behind the degree of the smile..

Its all about the eyes..

Just because a girl gave you a small smile does not mean she is interested in you. She is more than likely being nice/friendly and nothing more.

Huh, the poll's at 50-50. I guess no-one knows, but yeah, when in doubt, always assume something a girl does is an IOI.

Did that when I was younger, didn't do me any good really. I got rejected a lot because I would assume one little thing was an IOI when it was not an IOI. Its quite easy to take a smile as an IOI when in truth it is not one.

Yeah, but isn't it still better to be rejected and get that little experience, than not taking the shot at all? Assuming IOI's put you in a more positive frame anyway.

would you smile for no reason? is it natural for a woman to smile to strangers? maybe if you glance or smile at her. opening doors, let her pass before you and doing some act of chivalry you will usually get smile from woman. politeness, sexual attraction or whatsoever... the thing is she noticed you. IOI

In the US, I think it is common for people to smile when they make eye contact. I never did when I was younger and people assumed I was goth or dour or something. I still don't regularly and I think it makes people uncomfortable.
