I always seem to have problems with engaging a group, I'm fine talking to a girl on her own but from what I have been reading: in a group you must become the social center almost imediately.

Is this correct?
If it is: how do you do it?

What I do is try to do is read the news or follow up on sports, or even just asking opinionated questions. Depending on the environment you're in also matters. For example if you are at a house party you could initiate a drinking game, like Kings Kup, beer pong, etc.
