Start with a cage containing five monkeys.

Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the other monkeys with cold water.

After a while, another monkey makes an attempt with the same result - all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon, when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it.

Now, put away the cold water. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all of the other monkeys attack him.

After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted.

Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm! Likewise, replace a third original monkey with a new one, then a fourth, then the fifth. Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs, he is attacked.

Most of the monkeys that are beating him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.

After replacing all the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs to try for the banana. Why not? Because as far as they know that's the way it's always been done round here.

I read that story long time ago... but it's great!

Excellent post Finesse.

I'm going to write about this story in my blog... Thanks for the inspiration.

It is an excellent example of how society build walls around us.

there are no limits

Thanks for the props, bro.

Lemme know when you've got it written up, I'd be interested in seeing what you have to say!

This story brings me to discuss chaos. I believe that when humans first came to exist the world was in a state of chaos. Our ancestors spent their lives trying to build up security against the uneasiness of nature. They saw death, destruction, sickness and danger. Our minds battled with chaos, but inside ourselves we found consistency and safety. This need for security is how our society was built. When someone comes along that breaks the fragile reality that we want to be consistent, we get attacked verbally and socially, not physically.

The depth of this problem comes from externalization of our true selves. Men are constant. Our true self is the only unchanging thing in the world. Everything else is chaos, ever changing in many directions. We externalize this and try to project the unchanging self onto the world and other people. But this only creates conflict because we expect that which always changes to never change.

The monkey story is about ingrained principles and a need to follow what is already established. We all have it, and it comes from the days of our ancestors. Think about our society, we have things established. If you go against these, you will be ridiculed and attacked. If you go against the social norms, you are seen as a threat to the box that has been set up by society to make everyone feel safe and secure. Our security now is not of any physical principles, rather emotional and psychological. We have delved into ourselves because there is no real danger of being attacked or of some unknown natural disaster. Our survival is almost garunteed, so now people worry about social values that have been established.

We all know about social conditioning and it's detriment to our internal belief systems. This story is a great example of how quickly a new principle could be defined. If I was a monkey in this story I would just attack everyone and fight to the death to see who would get the banana fair and square.

Just like monkeys, instead of defining our own rules and principles, we spend our time recognizing what is already in place and then following it ruthlessly, just like everyone else.

monkey doesn't like getting sprayed, so he prevents it.

I don't like aids, so I prevent it.

Other monkey sees how the monkeys are preventing the other monkey and thinks, why is that.

The other monkey goes for a reach and gets attacked, not knowing the cause.
He guesses it's normal.

Girl sees me putting on a condom and thinks I do it because I don't want babies.

WRONG, I just don't want to catch aids.
