sarcasm is the lowest form of wit
Sarcasm is close to the top for list for wit. You have to be absolutely aware of your surroundings, and employ quick-fire thinking to immediately play off what the other person said.

Yes there is bad sarcasm for example saying "yeah whatever" in an argument.

v.s. good playful/cocky sarcasm like.
Person A says: "think i might wear 2 socks today, its cold"
Person B: "i tend to wear 2 socks everyday"

person A meant 2 pairs of socks, but person B. used good funny sarcasm.

that dialogue actually happened :P i was person B :)
That's not sarcasm, the modern meaning of sarcasm, is usually an ironic hyperbole.

"think I might wear 2 socks today it's cold"

"Oh yeah, it's absolutly freezing out there, I mean it's cause on the roads, and I think I saw a penguin! 5 degree's Celsius! Only the Arctic Tundra could reach that!" - THAT is sarcasm, it is remarably easy to do.
Thats easy to do for some, but could you imagine the guy who makes big macs all day coming up with something like that? Sarcasm requires wit and intelligence.

That is not a very nice thing to say.

I do not think that the intelligence levels of people are necessarily that big. Especially not if you compare different professions like that. I have met scientists who are much much more stupid than my unemployed uneducated friends.

It has more to do with how you define intelligence and how much training you have thinking in a specific field. Humor is a kind of social intelligence and it can be learned and trained. If you dont think that you have enough social intelligence to be funny, then hey you have found the right forum, we practice that kind of thing here.

I used to work all day making Big Macs because I couldn't find another job as times were hard, doesn't mean I'm stupid! I would waste time contradicting your ignorant statement but I don't need to prove myself to you.

Well I was pretty slow but that was due to a mix of arrogance and depression. Arrogance in thinking I was too good for that shithole and depression for reasons I needn't go into. But put bluntly as much as anything it was 'cause I couldn't be arsed, hated everyone I worked with (though one of the guys was apparently good with girls and happened to be fat, spotty and wore glasses but apparently still had game, so was an inspiration even though I didn't like him that much (probably partially as a result of jealousy :P ))

Sarcasm is a funny thing (zing!).

You really have to be careful with it. I find that those people that use sarcasm all the time seem like douchebags. I have some friends who use sarcasm a lot on me and honestly it makes me feel like an idiot when I talk to them. So, it doesn't make me feel good to be around them sometimes, and it makes them look bad.

Then again, sarcasm is an easy way to be funny, which I think is one of the reasons it may be looked down upon. It's such simple comedy to do, and lots of people find it amusing and funny. I personally find it hard to joke around with friends without the use of at least a bit of sarcasm or cynicism.

So, as long as you stay light-hearted about it and make sure the person you are being sarcastic about knows you're joking around, you should be fine. And by the way, try not to make fun of the girl too much (a lot of sarcasm has to do with poking fun at what the girl says or does) because I overdo this a lot and it hasn't really came out to my benefit.

Anyway, keep using sarcasm if its working for you, but try other styles of comedy too. There are other ways to be funny.

Sarcasm doesn't require intellegence, you just exaggerate the opposite of what you really mean.

Ironically, the people who I have met who use sarcasm frequently ARE the ones in those kinds of jobs.

And Sharplin is bang on, most people who use Sarcasm I have found to be negative, sour little douchebags.

Though that is a correlation not neccessarily a causation.

Well I suppose that is kind of true but at the same time its the way its done, its a case by case scenario I think.

Its like the Comic Book Guy on The Simpsons:

"Whoah a fat sarcastic Star Trek fan! Gee I bet you're a devil with the ladies!" :P
