I'm shy and awkward. Here's what worked for me.

Talk to someone. You're not trying to get laid here. You're not trying to build a friendship. You're just trying to exchange a few words with a stranger. Pick anyone. Doesn't have to be the hot girl. Just a person.

Look for something to remark on. First thing that comes into your head. Remark on it.

And once you've done it you'll realise that it was actually pretty easy. It's getting over that initial barrier that's hard.
