I've joined a free dating site in the uk. My Uncle is one there and he's been a natural all his life. He's recommended to me to have no profile at all, to come across as aloof/mysterious and not saying anything mundane, cliched or goofy.
I've tested it out and had a few responses; do you think it is a good idea?
Also what is a good length for a first message to a woman? So far I have just experimented by saying 'Hey, what's up' but I am sure there is a better way to ellicit a response from a woman. I just find their profiles are so repetitive and predictable and uninteresting I can't make conversation about them and it seems so boring to just ask a bunch of questions about where they live and what they do - I doubt they want to be drilled with questions.
Please help!

You're saying that their profiles are uninteresting, so ask her: 'What fascinating can you tell about yourself that I can not see in your profile?'
If they can't tell anything interesting you can easily decide whether you should date that woman or not.
Personally I would recommend to put some interesting facts about your self in your profile. Not too much.
