I couldn't agree with you more David and it's good to see other like minds on here.
I've shared the same insights with my students as well. One of the biggest things that I tell guys is not to actually "open" with magic tricks...as tempting as it can become...because that sets the frame that you're a magician...not that you can also do magic.
Magic should be used a spice...it livens everything up...but magic alone doesn't get you the girl.
When I discovered how well my little hobby worked and how to avoid the dancing monkey mistakes a lot of guys made, it had a huge impact on my game (and this was years before I read about Mystery or Style using magic tricks.)
It sometimes gets a bad reputation in the PUA community because guys don't know what they're doing and when they flop they assume it doesn't work. That's ok, the more secrets the better.
