My luck picking up has always been shit (because i had no plan). As a wing, I'm gold.
It's like a dance. You take cues from each other to play the game best.
What i mean by this is, try and make one anothers pick ups as easy as possible.
1. Play off your weakness - If he opens better, let him open some 2 and 3 sets.
- If you close better, help him out and build his DHV.
2. Play off each other to building interest - If your telling a story, you can add validation and confirmation to what he says. Two guys that seem fun and interesting are better then one.
3. Block obstacles for your wing - It's called taking one for the team. You can also neutralize the Alpha in the group.
A good wing can make something happen, when otherwise you wouldn't have even number closed. Trust me, I've helped plenty of buddies get laid.
On a side note, I like wings in the phone game. Say you both number close two close friends. Build crazy DHV for each other while your bull shitting on the phone
