Don't think coaching via only IM would be effective AT ALL because you can't see our nonverbals, which tell most of the story and let you give accurate feedback and real time improvement/awareness excersizes. But it would be good for students who have already met you in person to correspond OL afterwards to check up on progress and address new sticking points.
I got good enough at cold reading to read a person relatively well through the words they write. I'll be using NLP and direct speech to get past the bullshit and communicate effectively and informatively, anyway.

Ventrilo or Teamspeak dude.
Hell, I understand you can even make video conference calls over Yahoo now.
Ventrilo and Teamspeak are primarily used by people who live and breathe World of Warcraft and other such gamers. Hardly anyone else knows what those programs are. As for Yahoo messenger, no one uses that shit in general

I've no idea how you can train someone over the internet. All you can do is link them to sites like these and refer them to books and answer their questions?
I'm probably wrong

Imagine reading an ebook that is completely personalized to your individual needs. Oh, and imagine that the ebook magically writes more content whenever you ask it a question lol
It would be like the only ebook you'll ever need to read! That's what online coaching would be like.
