I still have a lot of AA, but the few times I do approach I don't really get anywhere. What is something I can say after the initial opener?

For example today, I was on my way to a sandwich shop, and I wanted to practice stopping a moving set (I did 2 sets) I asked them for directions (Even though I knew where I was going) I didn't know where else to go from there, so I just smiled and said thank you.

Although I believe for day game asking the time is rather AFCish, it can work.
If she seems really sure or gives detailed directions you can say "So do you drive cabs in the daytime?".
If she doesn't know you can empathize with her about being lost, and how your never really lost, just "turned around".
You could just say "its times like these I wish I had an IPHONe with GPS, let me ask you are you a mac or PC person?" and flow from there.
I think in the daytime you need more direct openers to really get them unless you have a situational opener like being in a library, line, etc.

If she seems to know the directions you asked for like a cabbie would then yeah neg her on that, or if she dont know make her sense you feel that too and use it as a topic, and or make a joke out of you not knowing.
But also try to find a direct style opener that might work more for you, or look for a situational opener to use other than directions.

well you should be on subject.
Like say your asking where the coffie shop is.
Just say that you going to meet some of your buds.

or if you want to get rid of this fear just go up to them and be straight up
