Pretty often happens here in Bulgaria too.

Last Saturday I was doing day-game workshop to a bunch of guys. One of them talked to a cute girl on the street. Just a minutes later a guy with cool car came up she just walk inside and he started insulting the group. But of course he was afraid to come out cause he would be dead meat.

I was in USA and West Europe many times - and never saw so many ready to fight guys there :)
I Poland you have the same... About one third of male population in Poland are bald, huge, agressive, doing nothing in life but going to gym, taking steroids and spending half a life in prisons.

Well what you have to realize is that a lot of guys have built their entire image around being a big tough crazy badass. It's how everybody sees them and it's even how they get women. The problem is that they constantly have to keep up their appearance. They can never feel weak or less than anyone else. They are also extremely competitive. They hate it when anyone else is better than them at something (which is why bullies target smarter kids), and they hate it when anyone else is getting more attention. Their tough exterior is based around inward insecurities, and those insecurities are made up of fear, and in an instant fear can turn into rage. When you do something that make them feel insecure, they have an instinctual fear which forces them to prove themselves to others watching. You are basically putting them in an emotional corner, and they react like wild animals.

I was a bouncer for many years and the most important thing I learned is the best way to stop a fight is to stop it before it happens. There is almost always a way to de-escalate a situation verbally before it gets out of hand. But not always. So I follow Teddy Roosevelt's theory, "speak softly and carry a big stick". Basically don't look for trouble, try to avoid it at all costs, but if it finds you... be prepared to deal with it.

Walk softly and carry a big stick. Or in my case a solid right hook. Forget BJJ and grappling, I've been submission fighting for years and love it but as soon as you hit the ground his four mates will rush in and kick your head off. Do some hardcore muay thai, forget more traditional kata based martial arts as well. If you want to read about confrontation and some cool ways of dealing with it read "Watch my back" by Geoff Thompson, or "The 3 second fighter" pretty uch covers what you need. As he says - "if you can't punch you can't fight." Best case scenario is that you never use it in anger, it makes you look buff and gives you more confidence.

1. BJJ is awesome.

2. However BJJ will get you fucked over if thier's more than one, like the above situation.

3. Sub-missions... ...REALLY REALLY! You expect him to tap out and say, "sorry man, clearly your better", then wander off.

Joint locks snap bones, chokes make people pass out and die. That was their origonal purpose before western society and "sport" bastardised it. :P

/MA MODE

Otherwise..

he's right, he felt threatened and wanted to intimidate you, your refusal to back down made him question his power and he stepped back.

The guy was obviously a chode, most guys wouldn't be so rough with you, nice work dealing with him! (Y)
A good bjj place will teach a lot of throws. throws are great in situations with multiple attackers. also a bjj place that focuses on gi techniques is also very useful since a person wearing a jacket or sweater can easily be used against them for a choike or for control. but i have to agree that combining a lil muay thai with your bjj will make you much more effective with multiple attackers.

i trained bjj for about 5 years on and off, and i have a blue belt from francisco mansor (who learned from Helio Gracie, and was even awarded a 9th degree BB by him).

also, i agree with the comments about how sport bjj has changed the art form a bit. while sport bjj will make you a better grappler, it wont teach you how to headbutt someone in the clinch for example.

I would perhaps like to add that this problem varies greatly depending on a country and culture.
I live in a country now with very macho society and with very lurge number of insecure individuals.
I know of a guy who got killed and another who got seriously screwed by a group of 10.
It sure helps to have at least 2 bodies with you just to make sure it doesn´t escalate that badly.
One thing is to get punched, another is 10 guys jumping on your head while you are on the floor and nobody taking you out of it.

That's a good point. When I visit my cousins in Mexico they make it their objective to go out and pick a fight so that the entire town will be talking about them the next day. It doesn't matter who they are fighting or why, as long as there are a lot of people there to see it happen. They even drive around and do crazy shit to people to provoke them into fights, hoping they will snap back and give them a reason to fight.
