Canned Humour, ironically that actually made me chuckle! You dont need to worry about cracking jokes all the time, situational comedy is generally a hit but can be few and far between with punch lines. I would say that your being too hard on yourself, placing pressure on yourself to be funny will generally stop the joke ideas from coming to you.

Just relax and let them come to you. Maybe even try replacing jokes with interesting topic conversation to help fill those awkward silences? Try and work out the person you are speaking to, try to spot the signs.

What i would do in a situation like that would be let her speak, as we all know women in general like to do that anyway but letting her speak and watching the signs such a sly smile here or a raised eye brow there will help you work out what SHE would be interested in.

Maybe use some routines to try and get HER opinion on a few things.
