I've always wondered this..
After you get a phone number..

Emoticons/smiley - should you be using them in text messages.. yes, no, depends on circumstances? (if so, which circumstances?)

I'm fairly comfortable with using them, but it wouldn't be a big deal to stop using them for me.. just wanted to know what you guys think..

My two cents:

Use a smiley/emoticon if there is doubt about what you convey.
Allow me to expand: Let's say you message a girl "You're such a brat". Without the emoticon of :P this can be taken wrong, she might think you actually consider her a brat. Remember, C&F, irony and sarcasm is hard to convey through a text-based medium, an emoticon will help her understand the deeper meaning.

use them to point out sarcastic/joking tones and try not to use too many.


one theory is that mirroring her smiley usage behavior will help build rapport

So basically it's ok to use them but only when needed and not too often.
