Here's something to grind your pretty little heads about, it's long and maybe a bit tedious. So if you have time, read it and help me think about it. Here we go:

A long long time ago, there was a country where the people were miserly, prostitution was legal and Harry Potter was president. But imagine that's actually not a long time ago, but now.

In this country we're of course students, some brighter than others. In most of the cities with universities there are ancient societies, some as old as the universities itself. From origin they are separated, as in the early days chicks just weren't allowed to get off and study, some still are others became mixed. Because they are so old, traditions have built up.

Explaining what these societies are like is hard as there are different types and they differ but they are also quite alike in every city. They are like frats, but not. You become a member in your first year or so, together with about 200 other people, go through an initiation of 2 weeks which can get pretty rough (broken bones etc are not uncommon, in my year there were 5 guys who had to go to the hospital) and then after initiation period you're a first year, at the bottom of the hierarchy that was created long ago and is maintained, firmly.

As a result of initiation close bond are formed and mostly also a sort of arrogant attitude is developped. In the eyes of those in the societies there is also a sort of ranking towards other people:
- Those of the highest value are those in their own society, with additional value towards those in their year, for the rest it goes on ancienty, thus the higher their year is, the more respect they get.
- Under those are the people from sister societies, the societies of the same kind in other cities.
- Third are people who aren't in societies
- Lastly are those in rivaling societies, as they are seen as people who made a life altering mistake.

My point to this thread is the following. As most of the students are members of said societies, also most of the hot chicks are members. Because of their attitude towards people who aren't in societies or even worse in rivaling societies, this creates an instant DLV. Mostly this goes so far that as soon as they know about your (non-)membership this determines if the conversation will continue or not.

What would be a good way to deal with this situation?

EDIT: I'll try to make the story more understandable if it's not clear enough.

If there is genuine attraction there should be no problem, unless you are a palaistinian and she is jewish. Generally If you are a fun guy and dont have a problem with it they shouldnt have also. This is a form of racism and prejudice (like because he/she doesnt belong to my social group he/she is inferior).I want to believe that there arent many people thinking like this. After all you want to hang out with like minded people. If they have a problem then maybe It's not meant to be..

If only it would be so easy, it is indeed a form of racism. And you're wrong about not many people acting this way, I perceive it to be very common. I too had it while I was in the society, especially the first few weeks. It's really a we-feeling (more a 'we are better than everyone else' feeling) that is mostly developped because of the rough initiation.

But it throws up a high threshold to even get to establishing attraction, as mostly it doesn't even go as far as the first few sentence. These chicks (and the guys too) have the inclination to ask whether you're member or not very early stage if not right away. It wears of after they become older, it's mostly a first/second year thing.
