Haha... Just read your post and coincidently I've been using a very similar opener for a few weeks now. It originally started as "Who would win in a fight between a kitten and a smurf" (stolen from AFC Adam I think) but when I told a friend he changed it to "Who would win between Superman and Jesus". I just thought it was brilliant because EVERYONE is expecting the second one to be SPAM or something similar. It kinda catches people off guard and they always seem to laugh (which is a good first reaction to draw from someone).
I do agree with what Guitarist said, that all a pretty girl needs to do is go completely and utterly direct to get a guy she wants, but I'm assuming you want *ahem* *ahem* "high quality" guys who, themselves, have certain standards and will not choose a girl based, simply, on her looks (because he has plenty of options already).
I may get plenty disagreeing with me here but here's how I'd approach it:
In most cases, I'd use a functional or situational opener and then transition. Get into the group while being fun and friendly. Talk to them all and be warm and stuff but don't try to lead the interaction or be socially dominant like guys are expected to do when picking up. Do, however, be a little more obvious with your flirtations than girls normally are because guys are REALLY shit at picking up on this stuff.
If your in, like, a cafe environment or something similar just go over and talk to the guy. Befriend him to a small degree first without the pressure of trying to game him. One big difference between guys and girls is that guys do not write off girls as romantic or sexual partners because they're already friends (in fact, in my own experience, I've always tended to be MORE likely to become attracted to a girl if we're already kinda friends).
Anyway, I'm tired so bye bye
Hope this helps in some way
