I'm like wtf.. this is against what the vast majority of the community preaches?
Is there some merit to this direct approach?

Of course there's merit to it, I go straight for the girl I like and it works for me. There is no need for confusion, because it doesn't matter whether you go straight for her or not... it's all down to your personal style and what you're comfortable with. There's no "better" way between the two; the only difference is you.
