I have an inkling that I am overdoing this cocky/funny thing. I can get it going sometimes.. but when im absolutely stuck with something to say i end up saying things that really border on insults as I am trying my darndest not to turn into a complimenting wuss or a predictable coversationalist. what do i do when i find myself in thoes ruts.. what are the "no go zones" for cocky funny? what are other conversational skills that i should also be leaning on?

Okay, C&F is a great thing when used properly, but it's a difficult thing for most people who aren't naturally that way. Becoming good at banter is a pretty good tool too, and has its C&F aspects to it as well. If you need sources for this stuff try these.

Old scenes from the show Moonlighting work too.
Triumph the comic dog is C&F, but he too gets a little carried away.
