Preface: I'm just starting to study PUA techniques. So far I'm trying to make myself speak to everyone I pass, guy or girl. I also try to have short conversations with girls when appropriate. (Elevator, standing in line, etc...) With that being said...

I stopped in Marshall's today at lunch to do some Christmas shopping and a 9.0 walked in after about 10 minutes. She went off to the middle of the store and I admired her body as she walked away.

I made my way towards the back of the store and we ended up on the same isle. Not sure if she had anything to do with that or not. I couldn't think of what to say, so I asked "so what did you get your mom for Christmas?". That turned into a good [short] conversation and she even continued talking as I initially tried to walk away. We talked more (about the same subject), exchanged names, and wish each other a Merry Christmas as we walked away.

I found a coat I thought my mom would like and made it back to the front of the store around the same time she did. I was on the phone with a friend and told them to hold on. I asked her what she thought about it and she enthusiastically told me it was really nice. Then, after she checked out she turned around and told me bye and good luck (from about 30 feet away).

I'm new at this, but I'm pretty sure there were some IOI's in there. Can anyone provide some pointers on closing next time? In hindsight, I feel like I should have said something like "hey, if you work around here you should take my number and give me a call sometime to do lunch"...or something like that.

Eager to hear how you more experienced bro's would have handled it.

Considering that you're just starting out, I think you did great. Dude, you managed to open and hold the attention of a nine! In a day game scenario! Bad ass!

I don't know if you could have gotten the number with that short and that low-key of an interaction, but there would have been no harm in going for it. Usually you'll need slightly wider rapport to make it happen, but that's not saying you couldn't have gotten her number.

As for going for the number, do it however you want. But keep it simple.

As for the number close in my personal experience i wouldnt ask for it directly. Instead you have to make them think that it was their idea. I would have said somthing like 'well im going to have to let you know how my mom likes her coat' or 'wow your pretty good I could use your help on all my holiday shopping'. both of these suggest getting her number and your goal is to have her offer it to you without actually asking. remember delivery and how you control the frame are very important here.
