I'm assuming you just met her? Do you want to just be friends or what?Make sure she knows by saying something like, "You're such a great friend" and not sexually escalating or else you might hear the dreaded words: I love you.

The "You're a great friend comment" is awesome. Feels very suave compared to "Let's just be friends". I'll use that next week.

How about when I just want a one night stand with someone and things are heating up. When should I say that I'm not looking for a relationship, before kiss close? Or is that the assumed state most of the time? Other guidelines?

It depends on the circumstance, their isn't 'one' particular way to bring it up.

Are you in a club/bar playing tongue twister with a girl you barely know, or are we talking about a girl in school or at work you're trying to game? Every situation is different.
