I guess it would work as an opener. But the way I have used it in the past has been more of a neg or just a comment to fill the silence. I love it because always give you something to say, you can refer to past experiences, or experiences of friends, you can go anywhere with alcohol.

notice: that I don't say 'are you drunk?' 'Are you sure she didn't drink too much?' is a much more open ended question imo.

Me: Are you sure she didn't drink too much?
Girl 2: Yes
Me: Well, thank goodness she is not looking at me, I don't want to get puked on. Or Damn, does that mean I am gonna get puked on? I better get out of here. Or Don't worry I won't move when she pukes, I didn't earn the nickname vomet comet for nothing...

Me: Are you sure she didn't drink too much?
Girl 2: No blah blah
Me: Well, I would fix that problem, but unfortunately I don't have any money for girl like that, they have to do something special. Can you do something special (ask Girl 1)? ...

Or just as a comment,
Me: You sure you didn't drink (a little) too much?
Girl 1: Yes, no, of course (not).
Me: Damn, looks like there is (no/heavy) competition here tonight.

Note: if you exagerate the 'a littllllleeee' you can make it cocky funny.

So many ways to BS in this one.

I was watching a movie the other day and heard a line (I think it was The Lookout) that I can't stop thinking of.

It's the ultimate in Cocky + Funny.

Guy ends up at the bar next to a good looking girl, over his shoulder he looks at her and in a very almost disappointed way with a smirk he says...."and I thought "I" was good looking" followed by a big smile.

as if to say by comparison you're hotter.

I don't know how this comes off over text but it was pretty damn funny and sounds like something I'd say.
