In otherwise young healthy males, alcohol is probably the single greatest cause of not being able to get it up.
The second cause is probably just being nervous and not truly being mentally and emotionally ready to have sex.
It one thing to want to lose your V-card, but it is a whole other thing to actually be "ready" to have sex with any one particular person and to be sufficiently aroused.
Much is said about female arousal and foreplay and such but the reality is men need foreplay just as much, they just may not need it for as long of a time.
The key is steady, progressive escalation (look up Vin DeCarlo's Escalation Ladder) You can't just be sitting around talking about stupid stuff and then say lets stick my dick in you. You have to escalate to build physical comfort and arousal.
Escalation is just as important for the male sexual response as it is for the female response.
