Not a pushover, but say there is a group of us and x beta male starts telling me about what he did on holiday, I will be very interested and ask him questions and just listen and compliment where needed (in a friendly, neutral way).
I am so confused as to whether this is a positive or negative thing, and how it makes me seem. I just cannot see it! It feels neutral, but I am really at a loss of how to feel about this part of my personality.
What do you think?

personally i think it's a good thing to be interested (or appear) interested in other people's ramblings. it makes them feel important and every one likes someone who makes them feel important.
there is a time and a place to be alpha. if you're alpha all the time you're just asking to be taken down a peg or two.
