Do you guys pick up in the train? When I'm in the metro either in Vienna or London there's a lot of the times a single hot girl that I end up sitting close to or next to or infront of. Do you guys chat up girls in the metro? The reason I haven't been doing it is if she is not open to conversation it will be awkward, but I think that's just an excuse. I'm thinking of just testing the waters and not going direct but asking where a certain place is and check whether she is open to conversation.

I live in NYC so I can vouch that I have opened in the metro before...some open me too lol. Just ask for directions or something. Something harmless as that can open a good conversation and if it doesn't go anywhere you can just thank them for the help and be on your way. As for inside the train, yeah, I still talk to women using a situation opener. Either way it isn't awkward unless you make it awkward.

Ye I've opened girls in the metro/train/subway and gotten numbers and/or because FB friends.

A simple "mind if I sit here" or "Are you guarding this spot? You look kind of serious! ;)" will do the trick.
You can go direct since girls wouldn't expect to get hit on in the metro, but keep in mind it can get kinda weird if you're just sitting or standing next to her without saying a word. (had that once) Always have something ready to follow up after you introduce yourself!

Personally I think when people are talking about picking up on the train/bus/any public transport they are overthinking it a bit. Just sit down, if there is a girl next to you, say hello, state you've got a long journey ahead of you and you prefer talking to pure boredom and that she looks interesting. If she isn't interesting then don't bother.

Get her number THEN the whole gaming thing comes into play.
