Would you try to open a door, or would you just open it ?
To label anything as "try" is to open to the possibility of failure.
If you chose to do this exercise, don't try to do it.
Relax, read through the exercise, sit comfortably, and do it.
It is a form of meditation, so if you have meditated before, or have done yoga etc. it will come easy to you.
Zazen involves sitting in a position that maintains an erect, relaxed spine, breathing deeply with your stomach, with eye-lids half closed, so as not to sleep, but keep conscious through the meditation.
Tantric energy may not be the same, but it works on the same principles which is to release dormant energy through introspection and relaxation.
In Zen buddhism, where zazen is practiced, the goal is understanding.
To reach Satori, which is the understanding of the universe or the world, and everything that relates to these.
Tantric sex and that stuff, is to my knowledge, focused on that the sexual act is a symbol for freedom and pleasure, as well as procreation.
So the Tantric rituals, which I consider this to be, are then focused on liberating yourself from the constraints we have build up around sex.
And the belief that once you do, it will affect the opinion others around you may have had about you, or generate a new sexual attraction where one was missing or dormant.
at least that's how I understand it, please comment if you have a better explanation.
When it comes to the question; Does it work ?
-yes.
If you do this, it will work.
If you dabble in magic of other sources than the Tantric one, they will too work.
It is my firm belief that what you believe affects reality.
If you believe that Tantra works, it does, if you doubt it, it may work, or it may not. (Trying will not get the results that doing will, most of the time)
(btw, it is a hypnotic suggestion that goes: ...now Try,( in vain,) to lift your arm, go on.... try. You may find that it is stuck, and that the harder you try to lift it, the more stuck it becomes, and so on....)
*Nods, you hit everything on the nail with your explanation.
Your right about Zazen & Tantra working with different energies, in my view I find that Tantra is much more body energy which then goes into the mind, being pleasure- estacy, etc. Where as Zazen focuses on the breathe and mind components more which then go into the body.
No matter how you look @ it though- the basis of most schools comes down to breathing then uniting the physical & mental through different disciplines.
