It has been raining a lot so I am going to bring an umbrella to class. None of the people have them, so I was thinking I could use it to open a set. Would it come off too needy if I offered them to use it?

Your headed on the wrong way my friend. If your thinking of ways to open a set you have the wrong ideology. You consider them more important than you. Because you think that just being yourself is not going be enough to start a convo. Just start with an indirect opener. Talk about the class about school and major and from there transition.
