Considering my philanthropic organization has been around since 1964 and features several hundred alumni who still come back to meetings, despite being the only chapter in existence, I'd say our goal isn't simply to major in chasing pussy and minor in drinking beers.
My former school has a very strong alumni following as well it counts on donations to keep tuition down and provide scholarships. People want to belong to something, plain and simple. Do not fool yourself into thinking that the reason that your "philanthropic organization" has an alumni following because of all of the good deed that were done.
And, uhh...1964 is not old at all. That is one generation, dood.

The bond of brotherhood is much different from "paying for your friends." That's the type of thinking that most college freshmen have. Funny, my dues go towards two things, to buy the alcohol served at open parties to maintain our reputation as good hosts, while the rest is donated to charity.
You missed my point. The point is that fraternities exist for the same reason special interest groups exist--there is strength in numbers and people are too afraid to stand on their own.
Occasionally there are good service organizations, but from my ample experience these aren't the Greek orgs in my experience. Btw, this goes for sororities too. The women I have met in sororities are about as vapid as they come.

And PS: I've been playing college lacrosse for 3 year before I pledged, the NCAA tournament starts Wednesday. I'll be there, will you?
No, why? Will we be having a dance off or something?
