I put this in approaching initially, but reconsidered because there are general questions.

I am not socially awkward, but this is one of those situations that can render me clueless. Just looking for pointers on mindframe, how to proceed.

I frequent a video rental store in my city (one of the last remaining). It is a favorite place for quirky, alternative, and sometimes cute college girls to work for the summer.

The usual setup is this: 3 geeky dudes working the store and cash registers, cracking jokes about films and games with each other, and always a lone girl in the mix. Recently I rented a DVD and this girl I'd never seen there before was working and said she liked my choice, and one of the dudes started chuckling at her and she turned red. As I left, we made eye contact and there was an unmistakeable vibe.

So basically - If I go back in there, is it a 'dont give a fuck situation'? It seems highly unlikely I will get her alone, so any work must be done around numerous people who will hear the whole thing. Any ideas? Or am I caring too much about what everyone thinks?

Ok this is at your own risk i am NOT suggesting this is the most effective way of going about this but if you are SURE there is a vibe i'd go direct like real direct.
walk in and start talking and if someone starts talking to her go with

*loudly*
"Dont you hate it when you're trying to chat up a cutie in a blockbuster and one of her mates totally cockblocks you sheesh!"
or to the guy
"Duuuude you're totally cock blocking me here"

-->dont forget to smile etc, you mean what you're saying but you're saying it because you're a funny guy not because you're annoyed

Something like that. Now i'm quite happy to do something like that it doesnt bother me but if you're the type of person that would say something like that and then think omg what the fuck did i just do "im so sorry" it probably wont work

I was walking past Next store in my city today. I just happened to glance at a girl who works there and she smiled at me. There was a bit of a vibe. I aim to go there tomorrow again and pretend to shop. Gonna tell her she's hot and if she fancies a drink. If it was just a friendly smile...at least I tried!

I finally got to talk to her, got her name, she asked me what I was up to later in the day, she told me when she got off work, but then the line started forming again and I didn't pull the trigger. Went back in and gave her my number, response was not great. posted a field report to take in the criticism.
