I've noticed that almost all the girls I talk to at school (I'm a high school senior) ask about my ex-girlfriend. Like why we broke up and stuff like that. We were together for a year and a half and it was a well known relationship throughout the school.

Now I'm stuck between deciding if a girl asking about my status is an IOI, or is just a common question since I get asked anywhere from HB4's to HB8's. It's hard to weed out who cares about if I'm single versus those who have no interest at all except for curiosity.

Ask them a completely inappropriate question. If they don't give a direct response, just say, "oh so you don't like it when I ask you personal questions?"

Do this in a playful tone. If you say this in an asshole tone, it will be hilarious, but it won't work in your favour.

Tell them that if they want to be your rebound they'll have to try harder than that.

Same problem. Dated this girl 2.5 years, she leaves me for my best friend and cheats on him. Instead of wondering whether or not a girl asking about me and my ex being an IOI, i make myself believe it is an IOI and use it to my benefit. Maybe i talk to the girl about what happened and i am fine(which got me a few numbers and sympathy), or I tell the girl I am now lonely but over the girl. That got me more than a number. My point: Use it to start a conversation, girls love talking about relationships. Turn the conversation to be about them and relationships. I do this after i tell the girl basically how amazing i was to my ex gf. She starts telling me about her bad relationships. I usually say something like "if theres anything i can do, let me know" after she says she is sad. Very direct, but it works for me. I am new to PUA, but i am telling you what works for me.
