Yes you can use preopeners when going direct, but a preopener is anything you say before you deliver your opener. so i would preopen with something like
"Hi, excuse me i know this might be a bit random, but...."
but remember that asking where starbucks is not going direct. So after asking where starbucks is i will show my intent simply by saying something like
"I actually know where the starbucks is. I just used that as a excuse to talk to you because i thought you were cute. Whats your name?"
really all the preopener does is make sure that sure is paying attention to what you are saying. So once you get their attention deliver your opener
