How to show less attention but avoid being locked off

Hi people

Need some help in understanding the line between not giving a girl too much attention and avoiding complete lockoff. I find I either give them too much attention and am too eager (i.e. I tend to say alot more then they do showing my overeagerness) or I find that I dont do ANYTHING, i.e. I dont give them any signals and then its just a missed opportunity.

THanks for any advice!
