You also accumulate points for hanging around the forum a long time and reading a lot of posts, in addition to the .01 point everybody gets every time they post.
The important number isn't the actual reputation in most cases, but the number of votes a person has and whether they were positive or negative. In order to find that out, you can click the "votes" link and a separate window will open with details.
