Yeah, good point. But would you agree that taking a hardline "I never buy any girl anything in any situation" stance is almost as bad as doing whatever they say without a thought?
I agree
completely, every situation calls for it's own solution. Case in point, some years ago I was taking out a cutie for the second time, we had stopped for gas before heading into the city. She grabbed some lip chap, gum, etc. which I paid for while putting through the fuel. I did it both as a sign of affection, and out of in interest in saving a bit of time since two transactions take longer than one.
Now I was conscious of the whole "setting the standard of paying for her" and actually felt a little on the fence about how I approached the situation. Despite this, she confided in me later that night, after we had finished having sex, that buying those little odds and ends for her really set me apart from other guys she had dated. In her experience, most guys she dated were broke leeches, always trying to get their chicks to pay for stuff. When I made the small gesture I did, without even realizing it, I sealed the deal with her.
If I had taken the hard line, and put my fuel and other shit through without offering to pay for her stuff, I would have lost out on that opportunity. Now there was no way I could have known this in advance, so it's not exactly related to what we're talking about. I'm just offering it up as one of the reasons I am wary of hard and fast rules. I didn't really express that clearly in my first response to your post, my mistake.
Bottom line in my opinion is: feel things out and don't be afraid to go with your instincts.
I agree with your idea, sometimes you need to be generous. However, the way I see it is that I usually just do it on small stuffs, like buying ice creams, chapstick, etc (stuffs that just happen because you're generous and not some cheap broke which doesn't make she think you're trying buy her affection).
I remember my AFC days, where I tried to buy for fancy dinner, and dates, in the end the girls ditched me telling me that I made them feel like they owe me something and they dont like it.
Now either I make them win it, or at least I make it so we can take turns to pay for stuffs.
