Social engineering question?

This is unrelated to game completely but maybe I can get some ideas from some of the more socially intelligent.

We've all seen viral sensations on the web.. Things that spread cuz one person tells a person who tells a person etc.

Could social engineering be used to cause this effect? Or if so, how?

possibly, but for it to become viral you'd need to socially engineer a very large or very influential group of people.

things only become viral if they are genuinely good (or have a good story behind them) if its not interesting then no one will share it.
