Me: (Spend 5 minutes working up courage to talk to girl, after having watched 5 other targets walk out of the place)
Her: (drinking and talking to friend)
Me: Excuse me... I noticed you earlier, and I just had to meet you before we left. My name is Onoma.
Her: Nice to meet you, my name is HB8.
Me: (Awkward silence)
Her: (Smiling/smirking)
Me: Ok, I don't do this that often so not really sure where to go from here...

At which point she basically said she wasn't sure either, and her friend said something to get the conversation going. Thanks HB8's friend!

So, after the direct opener... where DO you go with conversation?

The second thing is, after getting her number I sent her a quick text but got no reply. Probably not a big deal, but wondering if my text wasn't very good and maybe hurt my chances a little: "I know you're missing me already, but don't worry... I'll probably call soon. "


At the end she actually congratulated me for being brave enough to approach and being able to carry a conversation, so that's cool too.

just keep trying, eventually you'll come up with ideas that work for you about where to steer the conversation naturally.
