Hi, I was talking to this girl as I was walking away from one of my classes (I'm kind of interested in her friend but she wasn't in class today). I turned around as we were walking out and I said:

Me: "Oh hey there, you know, I forgot to ask you how you did you that exam last week.."
Her: "Blah blah I got a B, how'd you do, 100?" *big smile*
Me: "I got a 98.."
Her: "Omg, you are so smart blah blah"
Me: "Nah, I'm not that smart I just study blah blah"
..And the conversation continued without anything special going on until I said bye and she said bye since we were in the parking lot.

Now, as I was driving home I thought to myself: what the FUCK, why do I have such a serious problem with admitting that I'm seriously pretty fucking intelligent. Why do I need to like borderline-apologize for my intellect makes no sense to me from a rational perspective.

I think I'm afraid of alienating people (I do this with guys, too, so it's not a girl-only thing) so I just try to be faux-humble. SHOULD I be humble? Or in your opinions what should a good/ideal response be in these situations?

I think I just don't want to sound like an asshole when someone compliments me, but I just had the epiphany that I've been doing this almost my whole life (instinctually) and I'm kind of weirded out by why I even had to say "sorry" for something that in all honesty is one of the most sought-after qualities in a person or mate.
