1) Have the same problem. You should have a drink in your hand though. Buy one and just take small sips get a cocktail without any alcohol, don't even drink all of it. I don't think you should mingle without one though.
2) I think slang makes you sound immature and the more u use it the worse you come off. Talk to the girl like how you would talk to a job interviewer. Sound smart and interesting.
