Opening a set and target gets played

If opening a set i.e. a 3 set and shortly after opening a guy comes and talks to the target when you're supposed to ignore her what do you do? Either get rid of him and kind of stop ignoring the target or keep ignoring and try to get her interested when you're talking to her friends?
I've had this experience myself, it didn't work out so well as for playing the target eventhough I did get IOIs from her friend who turned out to be even hotter so it wasn't a loss, lol.
