I know some guys use it just to get laid, though I'm not clear on the specifics of that either, but I was wondering how it might work if you just want to number close with the intention of actually starting a relationship.
How would I make an approach like that? Would it be at all effective, or am I just setting up for failure compared to other methods?

See, when you use a neutral opener like, "what time is it?" or "I'm in the market for some new jeans...what store would you recommend?", you still have to transition into a direct statement of intent ANYWAY if you want to hit her attraction switches.
So say you used an indirect opener like one of the above, you're going to have to follow it up with something like, "actually, I just saw you and thought you were cute and I had to come talk to you." That being said, why not just cut the shit and start off with the direct opener?
"Hi. I saw you over here and I thought you were gorgeous. I had to come say hello and talk to you."
Offer your hand. Tell her your name. Hold her hand for a second too long.
I do this kind of thing all the time. Worst thing that can happen is you make a beautiful girl's day. Best case scenario is you end up leaving with her. Just remember that women love a man that makes her feel beautiful and sexy. _________________ Johnny
