Hi. New here, first post.

My problem is that I never really know what to do when a girl makes a self-depreciating statement like "I'm so fat." or "My friend is nicer looking than me." or whatever. I know that a lot of the time, consciously or not, they're looking for approval, ("fishing for compliments") but I really get the impression that suddenly just catering to their ego would be a weak move and predictable chump behaviour.

This happens a lot, but there's one specific girl I've seen a couple of times who always moans about being fat, even though she isn't at all. I usually just wave it aside with a dismissive "Ah... don't be silly!" before quickly changing the subject, but it keeps coming up.

I guess I could be really cocky and just go "Yup!" and shrug, but I think that's a little too overboard and not really appropriate when I haven't known a girl very long.

Thoughts?

I've been there before. Personally, to me it's unattractive when women do that too much. Once in a while is normal esp if they are hot.


I'd just say this:

AFC would say "Oh stop saying that, your one of the best looking girls I know"


PUA would say "I guess your right, you seem so convinced that your fat so you must be"

and just leave it at that.

Immature/insecure girls with low self esteem do this with each other as a way of figuring out social pecking order.

"OMG I'm so fat!"

"No, you're not fat, you look great!"

"Really?? You mean that?"

"Oh, yah - your ass looks amazing in those jeans... You know who's fat? See XXXX over there? She's FAT."

"Yah, you're right - she's a beast. HAHAHAHA"

The appropriate GUY'S response to this statement is something along the lines of "Huh? Listen - if you were fat, I wouldn't be talking to you."

And if she *IS* fat, what are you doing talking to her??

It depends on how you say it. It you say it like a complete dick, then it wouldn't work

You have to say it jokingly

I'd probably say:

"Yeah, not everybody can be as perfect as me"

I'd probably toy with her for half a dozen of seconds (plz don't do the math...)

Something like

HB : "I'm so fat"

You : "... Oh my... OH MY GOD... you ARE fat !!! I have to... I have to go now..." *turn around and start walking*

HB : *looking anywhere from surprised to outraged to whatever*

You : *turning back* (two choices depending on how offended she is)
1) (if she's laughing) Hey there ! It's a pleasure to meet you ! My name is ...., You look great ! And not even remotely fat ! What's your secret !?

2) (If she's offended) Ahahaha (be genuinely laughing) look at your face :p, but seriously you look gorgeous.



The thing is, if she has LSE, you'll have to reassure her and let her know you were being a dick on purpose but that you aren't normally that mean.

If she is a super hot babe trying to make you jump through the hoop, demonstrate higher value by playing hard and punishing her for trying to get compliments :p

Those are the rules of thumb.

When a girl says this, she may be shit testing us...

Respond with:

Me - "You're not fat, you've got nice curves and every guy here would rather go for a girl with curves than a stick insect."

Her - "You really think so?"

I'll grab a friend quickly and ask his opinion, he'll agree with me.

Her - "Wow, I never realised guys thought like that."

or

Her - "Nah, I still don't believe you."

If she gives you response one, great. If she gives you response two then answer with what Smartbomb said: "Huh? Listen - if you were fat, I wouldn't be talking to you." or something along those lines.
